Botanical Name:   Imperata cylindrica 'Red Baron'

Form:   Herbaceous perennial

Sun Exposure:   Partial Shade/Full Sun

Height/Habit:   12 - 16"

Spread:   10 - 12"

Spacing:   12 - 15"

Hardiness Zone:   Zones 5 - 9

Foliage Type:   Loose clumps of long, linear leaves, up to 20" long.

Flower Form:   Spike like panicle to 8" long.

Flower Color:   Silvery white.

Flowering Date:   Late summer.

Planting Requirements:   Full sun or light dappled shade will yield the best leaf color.

Soil Requirements:   Well drained, humus rich soil.

Growth Rate:   Moderate.

Unique Characteristics:   Clump forming ornamental grass with leave blades that start out green tipped in red. The deep red color eventually moves down and covers 2/3 of the leaf blade. Color stays attractive into late fall. Variety rarely blooms but that is okay, the interest is in the foliage.

Pruning:   Cut to base in late winter or early spring.

Additional Information:   This cultivar is tamer than the species. It is not considered invasive. If the plant reverts back to the species(turn all green), it needs to be removed from garden.
